Operating Procedures 1

STV-001 Lighting the Oil Stove

Situation

The boat has been opened up correctly according to procedure B-001. All electrical systems are functioning.

Procedure

1
Make sure that the interior of the boat is well ventilated. Open at least two windows.

2
Draw the curtain that hangs behind the chimney to the other side of the boat. The Chimney gets hot, and the curtain hangs too close to be safe.

3
Check that the main stove oil stop cock located in the engine compartment is open. It is open when the line of the red cock handle is aligned with the oil pipe it is installed on.

4
Check that the local stove oil stop cock located under a wooden trim cover between the stove and the saloon radiator is open. It is open when the line of the red cock handle is aligned with the oil pipe it is installed on.

5
If the stove hasn't been used for a while, push the cleaning rod at the back of the oil stove in and out a few times to clear the oil passageways. Make sure that you leave the rod OUT before trying to light the stove.

5
Make sure that the bottom of the burner pot is clean and free of burn residue and old matchsticks. If it isn't, pull out the cylindrical wire mesh from the pot and clean it all out. Put the wire mesh back as you found it.

7

Pour about 25ml of methylated spirit into the burn pot and light it. Let it burn for about 60-90 seconds to heat the pot.

Hint: If the meths keeps blowing itself out when you drop a match in, take a few square inches of kitchen roll paper and soak a little meths into it (just a little paper - not the whole sheet!). Push it to the bottom of the pot and light that. It too may blow out a couple of times, but it will take after about the third attempt to light it.

8
Turn the control valve on the stove to "Pilot" and wait for about 5 minutes for the oil to ignite and reach a clean burning temperature.

9
Turn up the heat control valve on the stove as far as is needed.
