Operating Procedures 1

Winter-001 Winterizing the Boat

Situation

The boat is to be closed and left for the winter.

Procedure

1
Make sure that the interior of the boat is well ventilated. Open at least two windows.

2
Clean the boat thoroughly.

3
Pump out the boat, adding the usual amount of blue. Put a little extra blue into the toilet and flush it.

4
Fuel the boat to 1" below completely full. This space allows for the expansion of the fuel on warm days.

5

Drain the water system

  • Shut off the main water stopcock in the front locker of the boat, directly by the water tank.
  • Open all water faucets on hot until water stops flowing.
  • Open all water faucets on cold until water stops flowing.
  • Leave some faucets open on hot and some on cold to let air into the hot tank while you drain it in the next steps.
  • Open the two drain valves on the floor of the electrical closet and drain the hot tank and the cold pipes into the bilge. This is a tricky operation - you have to just about stand on your head in the closet, so make sure you have someone there to help you out if you get stuck.
  • When the water stops flowing, close the valves.
  • Pump water out of the bilge using the bilge pump (the lower button below the throttle).
  • Flush the toilet to empty water out of the pump.
  • Close all faucets.
  • Remove the water filter housing and the filter in the front locker, and leave them in the kitchen sink.

6

Shore Power

  • Make sure that the shore electrical cable is plugged in to the boat and to the shore supply
  • Check that there is money on the electrical meter
  • Check that the breakers on the shore power supply are set to on

7

Set out the two winter heaters.

  • The heaters and froststats are stored in the front locker
  • Put one heater into the living area and one into the back bedroom.
  • Plug them in to the froststats and plug the froststats into the 240V wall points.
  • Check that the froststats are set to 'auto' by pressing the 'mode' button until 'auto' shows on the LCD panel.

8
Turn off all the 12V breakers. Leave the 240V breakers alone.

9
Turn off the gas at the bottle.

10
Switch the Vectron Power Management rocker switch (the blue box in the electrical cabinet) to its lower position (labelled 'Charge Only')

11
Check that the Whispergen is off

12

Refrigerator.

  • Empty the fridge and clean it.
  • Throw away anything on the boat that is perishable.
  • Leave the fridge door wedged open, and make sure that something is there to prevent it closing itself.

13
Bring in anything that is loose on the roof, especially the ladder plank. All this stuff can go in the front locker.

14
Coil the center ropes near the middle of the roof. This will limit the amount of roof that has to be scrubbed in the spring..

14
Install the cratch covers, front and back.

15
Check the mooring ropes. They should not be too tight, to allow for water levels rising and falling over the winter.
